SEO What makes a good backlink?

Some backlinks are more valuable than others, Google has spent a lot of time and effort developing automated analysis of a pages content so they can calculate the value of a back link. If a link lacks certain indicators that it is relevant then it can be scored downreducing its value to your site. You want to make sure you maximise the relevance of your back link.

The important thing to understand here is the word ‘relevance’. In its search results Google lists sites according to how relevant they are to the search term entered into its engine.

Here’s the kind of things Google looks for…

Google expects the anchor text (this is the bit that is underlined, and is the part you click on) to match the search term exactly. Next Google will look for relevance to the search term in the other text on the page, it is looking for the search term appear elsewhere on the page, not too much or it looks unnatural, but they will be looking for at least one case of the search term appearing in italics and one in bold, this tells the reader (and Google) that the article as all about this search term. Some or all of the search term should be in the title, this makes the page even more relevant.

The clever bit is where Google will look for is related (secondary) words in the body of text surrounding the backlink, it will identify and score words associated with the search term, this is the way it can tell the article is about (or relevant) to the term in the backlink.

The final indication of relevance comes from Googles own appraisal of the site containing the article. If the sites other content is about the same content, then it could be considered by Google as an authority site on that subject and then the backlink gets a huge boost.

So a backlink in an article that has they search term in the title, and in italics and in bold that is rich in secondary key words gives Google a better indication that the page linked to is more relevant to a search term, than a bunch of wildly targeted blog comments or forum posts. The page rank of the source site is less important that a page full of relevant text. Even better if you can get that article on a relevant authority site.

The link building service site can provide you with a source of blog sites, where you can post an article, full of relevant secondary keywords, some sites may even turn out to be relevant.
